In 1801, Robert Richard Randall,
a dying sea captain with no heirs, summoned his friend Alexander
Hamilton to advise him how to dispose of the sizable fortune he
had amassed. Hamilton, as the story goes, suggested that what Randall
had gained from the sea should be returned to the sea. And so Randall
bequeathed the bulk of his large estate to the formation of "an Asylum,
or Marine Hospital, to be called 'Sailor's Snug Harbor' for the
purpose of maintaining and supporting aged, decrepit and worn-out
sailors." Snug Harbor grew rapidly and flourished, fueled
by rents from the Randall estate at Washington Square in Manhattan.
But in the 1930's, the rents sank with the Depression, and the
Harbor fell into disrepair. By 1940, the stunning Greek Revival
architecture had yellowed and crumbled, as if in empathy with
the old sailors inside. -
Near the grounds of the Harbor, down a long, shaded dirt road,
is "Monkey Hill," the cemetery which was the final
stop for most all of the sailors who came to the Harbor. Indeed,
one could virtually add up all the previous residents by counting
gravestones. Curiously, however, in the early 1940's the enrollment
of the Harbor fell sharply, while the number of deaths remained
constant. Men were leaving the Harbor in order to join the war
effort on merchant ships. There were, it seems, several old seamen
who considered themselves to young to die. Who must have been
the first to go?
